Jesse Mendoza Ortiz, 86, of Independence, Kansas passed away peacefully on April 23, 2023 surrounded by loved ones. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Potts Chapel. Parish rosary will be 9:30 am on Friday, May 5th at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Independence, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am.
A life-long Independence resident, Jesse was born November 29, 1936 to Inez and Socorro Ortiz. He served his country in the Marine Corps during the Korean War and upon returning stateside married Phyllis Cruz of Parsons, Kansas. Jesse and Phyllis had three sons together; Charlie, Robert (Bobby), and Benny. Jesse later married Judy Ramsey, living briefly in Colorado before returning to Independence to raise their children, Michele and Michael.
For much of his working years, Jesse was a successful automotive body and paint restorer, winning multiple trophies and awards for his work. He also ran his own handyman business, serving the local area for several years.
Jesse was a faithful member of St. Andrews, and in his spare time could often be found visiting with his buddies at the American Legion. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle with the Legion Riders and spending time as “Papa” to his grandchildren.
Jesse was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Larry Ortiz and Raul Alcantar, and sisters, Dee Kitterman and Kathy Irving. He is survived by his wife, Judy, his children and heir partners/spouses, Charlie (Deb), Bobby (Paige), Benny (Mary Lou), Michael (Lisa), and Michele (Marty), 14 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
