Janie Brust

February 9, 1926 — August 16, 2022

Janie Odessa Turner Brust, age 96, died at home in the presence of her family in Lee’s Summit, MO on August 16, 2022. She was born on February 9, 1926  in Hockerville, OK to Otis Burl Cargile and Georgia Elizabeth (Kee) Cargile.

At the age of 13, she gave her heart to the Lord and was baptized into the Fire Baptized Holiness Church. She lived in a log cabin in the Granby, MO rural area not far from the Turner farm. She knew Ray F. Turner from both school and church. They were married on August 18, 1945 in Columbus, KS while traveling to a church camp meeting in Independence, KS, where they spent their honeymoon. She gave birth to Otis on January 19, 1947; Ray Dean on June 30, 1948; and Patty Gayle on September 25, 1956.

Janie had a passion for music and loved playing the Banjo, Guitar, Mandolin, Accordion and Piano, all were self taught.  She learned how to play the banjo by watching her favorite, Paul Smith, as he played.  She used her musical and singing talents to glorify God, singing in church and wherever she could sing. Her Christian ministry includes pastoring a church in Altoona, KS and Neodesha, KS in the early 1961.  Her sons sang with her at churches and camp meetings while they were growing up.  She even had her young daughter stand on the piano bench at camp meetings and sing with her. Later her ministry became traveling to different churches and singing with her husband, Ray; son, Ray Dean and his wife, Sherry, along with their children John, Jason, and Tony making up the Turner Family Singers. They did this for several years, singing and glorifying Jesus.

She loved to cook, and all of the family enjoyed her home cooked meals!  Everyone enjoyed her breakfasts and her homemade strawberry jelly.

She owned the Townsman Cafe in Independence, KS around 1966 or 67.  She loved people and people loved her.  She enjoyed the business of serving people.  Later she worked as a cashier for the Great China restaurant, again enjoying visiting and seeing many familiar faces in the community.  It was said about her that she “never met a stranger.”

She lived in a high-rise where she had people around her and enjoyed living in the same building as her sister-in-law and best friend, Dorothy Cargile. They spent most of their lives living near each other both in Port Angeles, WA and Independence, KS.  They sang and played music together in church and wherever they could. Odessa’s (Janie) dad, Otis, pastored in many places for 40 years, so there was always a great place to sing for the Lord, who gave her the talent.

Ray, her husband of 64 years, passed away in 2010. At 85 Janie married Wayne Brust on June 17, 2011 in Granby, MO. He was the pastor of the Granby Miracle Church, where again, she played her banjo and guitar and sang praises to the Lord.  Wayne went to be with the Lord 12/30/21.

As young men, Ray and Wayne were best friends. Wayne married Janie’s cousin, Charlene, and the two couples did a lot together when they were young and even continued to be best friends and camped together even after retirement.

At the age of 89 she authored a book entitled, Janie Odessa’s Little Book of Clichés and Scripture Verses. She had many “favorite” bible verses.  She once told her daughter, “Everyone should read Romans 10:9”.  She wanted to see everyone go to heaven, even those she didn’t know.
