James H. Lumley, age 90, of Caney, Kansas died Sunday, February 15, 2009 at the Coffeyville Regional Medical Center in Coffeyville, Kansas. Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 19, 2009 at the Fairview Cemetery in Niotaze, Kansas under the direction of the Potts Chapel. Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 18, 2009 with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the VFW and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas. James was born May 13, 1918 in Peru, Kansas to James and Chloe Lumley. James attended a country school. James was drafted into WW II in 1941 and served in the 35th
ision in field artillery. Serving 5 major battles including Battle of the Bulge. He served four years from the shores of France to 30 miles within the front of Berlin. He would drive artillery back and forth in the dark without lights, feeling his way delivering ammo to the front. He was honorable discharged on October 14, 1945 receiving 6 medals. On November 30, 1945 James married Dorothy Ledbetter. They lived in Hulah, Oklahoma, Niotaze, Kansas and for 24 years in Dearing, Kansas. James worked at Mullendore Ranch for about a year and then became a farmer for the remainder of his working years. He also raised and broke horses for people to ride. He was a lifetime member of the VFW. Survivors include his wife Dorothy of Caney, Kansas; one brother Ivan Lumley of Caney, Kansas; two sisters Aletha Jessieph of Wellington, Kansas and Cleotha Fulk of Sedoltina, Alaska. He was preceded in death by his son James H. Lumley Jr.; four brothers Roy, Gene, Marvin and Wayne Lumley and one sister Emmogean Smith.
