James W. Cooper, age 88, of Independence, Kansas died Monday, October 18, 2010 at his home in Independence, Kansas. Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 22, 2010 at the Fredonia Cemetery in Fredonia, Kansas under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m., to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, October 21, 2010 at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the Disabled American Veterans and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. James was born July 18, 1922 in Thayer, Kansas to Oliver Perry and Dora E. Barlow Cooper. He grew up in the Southeast Kansas area. On September 23, 1941 James entered the United States Army and served during World War II until his honorable discharge on November 9, 1945. James married Opal Cooper and the couple later divorced. On May 15, 1978 James married Lola Wright in Miami, Oklahoma. Lola preceded him in death on July 17, 2002. James worked for Persky Iron Metal for several years. He drove a truck for over 35 years for several different companies. James also worked as a crossing guard and bus rider for the Independence High School. He was a life member of the VFW Post 1186 and the Riverside Southern Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons Gary Cooper of Fredonia, Kansas and Jerry Cooper of Kansas four step sons Edward Smith of Ohio, Jerry Smith of Nebraska, Harry Smith of Washington and Joseph Smith three step daughters Linda Goeken of Larnard, Kansas, Vickie Anderson and Cindy Smith both of Independence, Kansas 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
