Jack Edwin Gorman, 78, of Independence, Kansas, received his heavenly reward on Friday, May 24th. Celebration of Life services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 29th, 2013 at the First Assembly of God Church, 2414 North 8th Street, Independence, Kansas. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery under the direction of Potts Chapel of Independence. Friends may pay their respect Tuesday, May 28th, from 10:00 a.m., until 8:00 p.m. at Potts Chapel, 122 South Penn, in Independence, with family visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the First Assembly of God Church, Independence, Kansas. Mr. Gorman was born in Forrest City, Arkansas on October 6th, 1934, to Lester E. and June Cantrall Gorman. Much of his childhood was spent on farms in Arkansas and Mississippi before moving to East Chicago, Indiana graduating from Roosevelt High School in East Chicago, Indiana. Mr. Gorman continued his education at Central Bible College, Springfield, Missouri becoming a licensed minister with the Assemblies of God in 1954. On December 21st, 1956, Mr. Gorman was united in marriage to Naomi Hayes Gorman. After serving as pastor of the Indiana Harbor Assembly of God Church, the couple relocated to Oswego, Kansas where Mr. Gorman served as assistant pastor until moving to Independence in 1960. Mr. Gorman served as Chaplain, with the Independence Police Department, for 32 years and was a member of the International Conference of Police Chaplains. Jack was very involved with the local Assembly of God church, in many positions, including teaching the mens bible class and Kansas Senior adult ministries coordination for Southeast Kansas Assemblies of God. Jack and Naomi conducted services for Penn Terrace and Eagle Estates. Jack conducted the service while Naomi sang and played the accordion for the residents. Jack proudly served with any other organization that needed a hand, such as the Red Cross, Lions Club, and Mercy Hospital Auxiliary. Along with his wife, Naomi, Mr. Gorman is survived by two sons and one daughter Vic Gorman and wife Sheryl, of Independence, Kansas, Jeff Gorman and wife Lona, of Wichita, Kansas, and Janice Broyles and husband Darryl of Olathe, Kansas. Jack has eleven grandchildren and one great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Bill Gorman, and one sister, Juanita Miner.
