HUGH B. MANTOOTH SR, 85, DIED AUGUST 31, 2010, AT THE ST JOHNS MEDICAL CENTER IN TULSA, OKLAHOMA. CELEBRATION OF LIFE SERVICES WERE HELD TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2010, AT THE POTTS CHAPEL OF CANEY WITH THE REVEREND BRAD SANDERS OF THE FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH, CANEY, OFFICIATING. HUGH WAS BORN DECEMBER 14, 1924, IN RURAL PERU, KANSAS, THE SON OF BROOKS CLEVELAND AND MAE ELORA TRESNER MANTOOTH. HE ATTENDED AND GRADUATED FROM THE SEDAN SCHOOL SYSTEM. ON FEBRUARY 9, 1946, HE WAS UNITED IN MARRIAGE TO JUNE L. McAFEE IN SEDAN, KANSAS, AND SHE SURVIVES AT THE HOME IN CANEY. HUGH JOINED THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS ON DECEMBER 11, 1942, AND SERVED DURING WORLD WAR II AND THE KOREAN WAR. HUGH WORKED HIS WAY THROUGH THE RANKS TO FIRST LIEUTENANT RETIRING FROM THE MARINE CORPS ON JANUARY 1, 1963, AFTER SERVING 21 YEARS. HE THEN WORKED AS AN OPTICIAN FOR 27 YEARS FOR DOCTORS DOYLE BURCH AND ROGER BURCH, CANEY. SURVIVORS INCLUDE HIS WIFE JUNE, FOUR SONS: HUGH B. MANTOOTH II OF HAVANA, KS., BRADLEY V. MANTOOTH OF CANEY, KS., BRENTLEY C. MANTOOTH OF ONTARIO, CA., AND BERNARD L. MANTOOTH OF DEWEY, OK. TWO DAUGHTERS LANA L. THOMPSON OF LAFAYETTE, CO., AND LISA M. SHIVELY OF OLATHE, KS. AND 17 GRANDCHILDREN AND 19 GREAT GRANDCHILDREN. SURVIVORS ALSO INCLUDE THREE SISTERS NEVA PARKER OF WICHITA, KS., THELMA BURCH OF CANEY, KS., AND VESTA MILLER OF FAIRPLAY, MO.
