Howard (HD) Henderson, 83, of Independence, Kansas passed away at his home on Wednesday, March 3, 2021. A Celebration of Life service for H.D. “Sonny” Henderson will be held at Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas on March 10, 2021 at 1 p.m. Visitation from Noon to 1 p.m. In Lieu of flowers the family has suggested memorials to Medicalodges of Coffeyville Activity fund and may be left at the funeral home.
HD was born in Liberty, Kansas to Howard A. and Earsley B. (Jolly) Henderson. His family later moved to the rural Independence area in 1945. He graduated from Independence High School in 1956. H.D. married Zoe Nell Prather (of Sycamore, Kansas) on June 10, 1960. Together they raised two sons.
H.D. worked at the local cement plant, which he retired from after 33 years. During this time, H.D. was a member of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Auxiliary, a volunteer firefighter and cattle rancher. He graduated from Missouri Auction School and worked as a local auctioneer, before starting his own auction service. He was a lifetime member of Masonic Lodge #107. He continued to raise cattle during his “retirement years”.
H.D. was preceded in death by his parents Howard A. and Earsley B., his wife of 32 years Zoe N. and his brother James R. Henderson, all from rural Independence.
H.D. is survived by his sister, Virginia Bredehoft (Independence, Ks), his sons Garry Henderson (Willis, Texas) and Harold D (his wife Regina) Henderson (Wichita, Ks).
Grandchildren: Justin Henderson (Independence, Ks) Shane Henderson (Knoxville, Tn) and Alyssa Henderson (Phoenix, Az), five great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a special friend, Thelma Dulohery (Independence, Ks).
