Helen Belt, 98, of Independence Kansas, died Sunday at Coffeyville Memorial Hospital. A celebration of her life will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, at Potts Chapel with Pastor Mark Lyon, Senior Minister of the First Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. Mrs. Belt was born in Springfield, MO., October 1, 1918 to Lawrence E. Goodwin and Alma Alexander Goodwin. She graduated from Mound Valley, KS High School in 1936 and attended Pittsburg State Teachers College. After graduation, she taught several years. Later, she and her husband operated Belt's Furniture Store in Independence before their retirement.
She married Ivan K. Smalley in May 1941. He passed away in March 1944. In December 1951, she married Elmer A. Belt. He passed away in February of 2011. Mrs. Belt was a member of the First Christian Church for many years. Her Christian joy and kindness were evident to all.
Survivors include; one brother, Leo Goodwin, of El Dorado, KS, and eight loving nieces and nephews, eighteen great nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her parents, two sisters, one brother, two great nieces and a nephew.
The family has suggested memorials to the First Christian Church and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel.
