Hazel Mordy, age 94, of Independence, Kansas, died Friday, January 7, 2011, at Gansel House in Independence, where she was a resident since 2006. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am , Friday, January 14th at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Dee Williamston officiating. Cremation has taken place and there will be a private burial at Mount Hope Cemetery for family members. Visitation Hours will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2011 with the family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Hazel was born on July 16, 1916, in Fort Scott, to Eunice Conine and Frank Shoemaker. Her father was a pharmacist and local businessman in Ft. Scott, and her mother was a homemaker. Hazel attended Fort Scott schools and graduated from FSHS in 1934. She attended Ft. Scott Community College and Kansas State University, graduating in 1938 with a B.S. degree in Home Economics. She enjoyed cooking a great deal and later published two cookbooks. She was very active in the local community and loved to help others. She was a member of United Methodist Women and Circle group, Triad Club, DAR, Independence Historical Museum and Friends of the Library. She also volunteered for the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary. She will be missed by her friends and loved ones. Hazel was also very active with gardening and was a past member of the Independence Garden Club. She also loved to paint and gave many of her paintings to friends and relatives. Hazel was well known for her various crafts, especially her wheatweaving. She was a member of the Kansas Wheat Weaving Guild, that made her an honorary member. In 1938 she married Lloyd Mordy of Derby, Kansas. The wedding was held in Fort Scott, after which they moved to Silver Lake, where Lloyd was band instructor at the local high school. After teaching positions at schools in Garnett and Marysville, Kansas, the Mordys moved to Independence in 1950 where Lloyd was music instructor at both the high school and ICC. Hazel worked at the local SRS office as case worker and a supervisor until retiring in 1979. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, in 2000, and by her sister, Mary, who passed away in 1998 at Fort Scott. Hazel is survived by her three sons: Murle Mordy of Ottawa, Kansas, Ed Mordy of Mequon, WI and Ron Mordy of Independence. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Andrew Mordy of Mission Viejo, CA, John Mordy of Mequon, WI, Melissa Mordy of Milwaukee, WI, and David Mordy of Lincoln, NE, and four greatgrandchildren. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Gansel House for their kind care and support. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials to the First United Methodist Church or to the Independence Historical Museum, and can be left at Potts Funeral Home in Independence.
