Harry Vincent Pittman, age 85, a lifetime resident of rural Independence, died Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at the Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 16, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Independence, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May15, 2011 with the family receiving friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the Caney Valley Antique Power Association or the First United Methodist Church and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Mr. Pittman was born on July 24, 1925 in rural Independence, Kansas the son of Harry Milton and Faye Edna Newmaster Pittman. He attended rural Montgomery County Schools and graduated from the Independence High School in 1943. Mr. Pittman ranched and farmed throughout his life in Rutland Township West of Independence. He raised Herford Cattle and owned and operated Pittman Fertilizer Company from 1965 to 1990. Part of the family farm was recently designated a Century Farm by Kansas Farm Bureau. He married Jeroldine Crain on September 10, 1950 in Independence, Kansas. She survives of the home. Mr. Pittman was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Independence and served in leadership positions with the Kansas Farm Bureau, the Montgomery County Soil Conservation District, 4H and the Rural Water Board. He was a founding member of the Caney Valley Antique Power Association. Additional survivors include two daughters, Linda Lynn of rural Bartlett, Ruth Ann Pittman Falls of Olathe a son, Bob Pittman of Dallas a sister, Mary Torrance of rural Independence a brother, Bill Pittman of Tulsa seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
