Harry D. Nelson, 88, Independence, Kansas passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2015 at Mercy Hospital in Independence, Kansas. Graveside Services will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 10 at Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, Kansas. Friends may sign the register on Wednesday September 9, from 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. with the family receiving visitors from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., at the Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to V.F.W Post 1186 and may be left with the Chapel. Harry was born November 3, 1926 in Holdrege, Nebraska to Oscar Harry and Victoria Hilda (Peterson) Nelson. Harry attend Holdrege, Nebraska schools and the family later moved to Independence, Kansas where Harry graduated High School. Following High School Harry joined the United States Army and served two tours in WWII following a honorable discharge from the Army. Harry found employment with Sinclair Oil in Independence and later was employed by Automotive Controls Corporation in Independence and transferred to the Kansas City Plant until it closed. Then Harry moved back to Independence and found employment with Conoco Phillips where he was employed for 20 years as head of the Data Processing Department. Harry is a lifetime member of V.F.W Post 1186, The American Legion, and Zion Lutheran Church. Harry was preceded in death by his wife Gretta "Tootie" Nelson, his companion Martha "Martie" Richardson, one son, Richard Nelson and one brother Verlen Nelson. Survivors include his son Jimmy and wife Kathy, Oklahoma City, OK; 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Arrangements by Potts Chapel of Independence.
