Harold Dean Terry, age 83, of Independence, Kansas died Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at the Regal Estates in Independence, Kansas. Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Elk City, Kansas under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, January 22, 2010 at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the Elk City Power of the Past Tractor Club and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Harold Dean Terry was born April 22, 1926 in Winfield, Kansas to Roy and Aliua Ravely Terry. On October 19, 1944 Dean entered the United States Army and served during World War II until his honorable discharge on December 2, 1946. Dean worked for Allis Chambers and a John Deere Dealership, he also graduated from the Police Academy. He was a Highway Patrolman for two years, in Trenton, Missouri. Dean also owned and operated a gun shop in Trenton, Missouri. On October 14, 1970 Dean married Betty Gillman in New Mexico and the couple later divorced. Dean worked for a machine shop in Aztec, New Mexico. After moving back to the Independence area Dean worked for Sektam and various machine shops in Independence retiring in 1988. After retirement Dean worked on the farm and old tractors. He was president of the Elk City Power of the Past, member of the KANOK in Winfield, Kansas and the Inter Harvester Collectors Club, he was a lifemember of the NARA, life member of the VFW in Trenton, Missouri and the Disabled American Veterans. Survivors include his life companion May Hendricks of Independence, Kansas two step sons Larry Gillman of Independence, Kansas and Chris Gillman of Cherryvale, Kansas five step daughters Pam McLaughlin of Cherryvale, Kansas, Peggy Warren of Wichita, Kansas, Paula Wilson of Congress, Arizona, Penny Stueve of Olpe, Kansas and Pearl Schoonover of Elk City, Kansas one sister Hazel Terry of Trenton, Missouri sisterinlaw Anna Terry of Farmington, New Mexico two nieces Linda Hawthorne of Farmington, New Mexico and Anna Strauss of Aztec, New Mexico 15 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren He was preceded in death by step daughter Patty Storm.
