Glen L. McKelvy, age 80 of Independence, Kansas died Monday, June 14, 2010 at the St. Francis Memorial Hospital Harry Hynes Hospice unit in Wichita, Kansas. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 17, 2010 at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas with the Reverend Willie Jones of the Grace United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 16, 2010 with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and contributions may be left at the Potts Funeral Home. Glen was born December 5, 1929 in Chanute, Kansas to Claude and Opal Potts McKelvy. He grew up east of Chanute, Kansas and graduated from the Chanute High School. After graduation Glen went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad until he entered the United States Air Force and served for four years in special forces during the Korean War in London, England. On October 1, 1950 Glen married Phyllis J. Main in Arkansas. The couple lived in London, England while Glen was in the Service. After his honorable discharge Glen and Phyllis made their home in Independence, Kansas. Glen went back to work for the Santa Fe Railroad for 44 years before retiring in 1990. He was a life member of the VFW, American Legion, Elks Lodge and a member of the Retired Railroad Association in Chanute, Kansas. Survivors include one daughter Teresa Bockover and husband Richard of Independence, Kansas one brother Vern McKelvy of Joplin, Missouri two grandchildren Jennifer J. Scott and husband Keith of Arma, Kansas and Crystal VanSchuyver and husband Drue of Chickasha, Oklahoma six great grandchildren Cole, Tristan, Conner Scott, Shelby, Lane and Logan VanSchuyver. He was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis on September 5, 1993 and his parents.
