It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gayla Marie (Winkler) Freeman on November 1, 2024, in Independence, KS. Gayla Marie (Winkler) Freeman was born on January 26, 1955, in Independence, KS to Elzie and Mildred Winkler.
Gayla loved her job as a Quality Control Specialist and loved giving beautiful cuts and styles as a Cosmetologist. She was a dedicated foodie who loved preparing wonderful meals for family and friends. Anyone who sat at her table knew it was food prepared from love. From her love of food flowed her joy of gardening, usually raising a large crop of lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and more. She particularly enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie of the local Independence, KS Garden Club.
When the work in the garden was done for the day, it often continued on her back patio that she covered in beautiful flowers during spring and summer. Her home wouldn’t be complete without the love and affection she had for her furkids. And she loved collecting sculpted specialty salt and pepper shakers.
Gayla was also passionate about the relationships and work she shared with fellow sisters in the local chapter XI Epsilon ETA of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority that that was created for young women in search of culture and social activities. Gayla was an active member from October 1989.
She is survived by husband John Freeman, son Todd (Gena) Hyatt, grandson Eli Hyatt, granddaughter Alyssa Hyatt, sister-in-law Beth Winkler.
Gayla is preceded in death by parents Elzie and Mildred Winkler, and brother Stephen Winkler.
Memorial services will be held on November 11, 2024, at 1 pm at Potts Chapel in Independence, KS.
