Frances Eloise Steel, 100, of Fredonia, Kansas formally of Independence, Kansas died Thursday, April 11,2013 at the Presbyterian Manor in Parson, Kansas. A Private Family Celebration of Life Services will be held under the direction of the Potts Chapel, Independence, Kansas. Frances Eloise Steele was born October 2, 1912 in Benton City, Missouri the daughter of John J. and Hattie Abernethy Steele. Frances moved to Fredonia in 1933 where she worked for the Telephone Company and the State Bank of Fredonia. In July, 1945 Frances proudly served as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army W. A. C. in the 1798th Service Command Unit in Fort Des Moines, Iowa. She was Honorably discharged in March 1946. Frances worked for the Independence State bank from 1946 until her retirement in 1973. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Independence, Kansas and where she proudly served as a Deacon, Elder and Trustee until she moved to Fredonia in 1997. Survivors include her sister, Maxine Steele Harkins of Fredonia, Ks. and a stepbrother, George Steele of South Carolina.
