Frances “Jean” Smading, of Independence passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2020 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri with her family by her side. A Graveside Service will be held Friday, July 3, 2020 at 11:00am at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, Kansas. A book signing along with a viewing will be available Wednesday and Thursday at Potts Chapel, 10:00am-3:00pm. Memorials are suggested to the Independence Historical Museum and can be left with the funeral home. Mask will be required and available if needed. Immediately following, family and friends are welcome to join the family at the Concession House at the Riverside Park.
Jean was born on August 21, 1943 in Independence, Kansas. She was the daughter of Herman and Nellie (Bailey) Scott. Jean graduated from Independence High School in 1961. She married the love of her life, Oren “Dale” Smading on April 24, 1961. The couple moved to the San Diego area before returning to Southeast Kansas in 1966. Jean was a financial assistant for many years, working for Independence State Bank and First Federal Savings and Loans. She enjoyed quilting and reading but most of all she loved spending time with family and friends. She was a volunteer for the Independence Historical Museum and for Mercy Hospital serving on the Women’s Auxiliary. Jean was also a member of Beta Sigma Fi Sorority.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, sister Crystal Mast and brother LeRoy Scott.
Those left to cherish her memory are sons: Timothy Smading of Independence, KS. and Dan (Lisa) Smading of Wichita, KS., daughter Andrea (Greg) Laudick of Lenexa, KS., eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
