Sonny Forrest Wayne Strickland, age 54, of Cherryvale, Kansas died Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at the Mercy Hospital in Independence, Kansas. Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 21, 2012 at the First Baptist Church in Cherryvale, Kansas with the Reverend Jeff McCullough officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Cherryvale, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the Sonny Strickland memorial fund and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Cherryvale, Kansas. Sonny Strickland was born August 21, 1957 in Wichita, Kansas to Forrest D. and Barbara Blackburn Strickland. The family lived in California and Nevada before moving to Cherryvale, Kansas in 1966. Sonny attended the Cherryvale School System. On January 8, 1977 Sonny married Teresa Smith and the couple later divorced. In 1978 Sonny entered the United States Air Force and was stationed in Louisiana, England and Michigan before his honorable discharge on June 14, 1987. Sonny then graduated from the Independence Community College. Sonny worked at the Ammunition Plant in Parsons, Kansas, and then for Strickland Masonry with his Dad and brothers before going to work at Cessna Aircraft from 1996 until 2009. He attended the First Baptist Church of Cherryvale, Kansas. Survivors include one son Tyler Strickland of Pittsburg, Kansas three daughters Tiffany Strickland Jackson and husband Rus Jackson of Independence, Kansas, Amber Shouse and husband Aaron of Frontenac, Kansas and Taylor Dodson and husband Jamin of Pea Ridge, Arkansas his mother Barbara Strickland of Cherryvale, Kansas two brothers Bruce Strickland and Steven Strickland and wife Linda of Cherryvale, Kansas three sisters Janet Carter and husband Michael of Mustang, Oklahoma, Tanna Boss and husband Greg of Cherryvale, Kansas and Tori Armbruster and husband James of Cherryvale, Kansas three grandchildren Sydnee Jackson, Mason Jackson, and Ella Shouse. He was preceded in death by his father Forrest Strickland.
