Evelyn Jean Passauer, 99 of Independence, Kansas passed away at Montgomery Place in Independence on Sunday, May 16, 2021.
Evelyn was born on September 13, 1921 in Piedmont, Kansas to Fred and Hazel (Hasty) Rader. She grew up in Piedmont attending Piedmont High School. While in school, Evelyn enjoyed playing basketball. She graduated in 1939. Evelyn married Clement Russell Hammer in Ponca City, Oklahoma in 1939. The two later divorced. She then married June Passauer in Miami, Oklahoma in 1971. He passed away in 1987. Evelyn worked at Southwestern Bell for 27 years until retiring in 1979. While at Southwestern Bell, Evelyn was awarded numerous awards for her excellence and perfect attendance. After retirement, Evelyn just could not sit still. She began working as the manager of the Terrace Town House Apartments in 1992. She continued this work until 2001. Evelyn was a member of the Communications Workers of America and the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved to play BINGO and cards, especially Gin Rummy. She also loved to tend to her garden and enjoy the beautiful flowers.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Hazel Rader, husbands, Clement Hammer, and June Passauer, two infant sons, Dennis and David, two stepsons, brothers, Robert, Bill and J.L. Rader, sisters, Marie Scott, and Guida Rader, and grandson, Steven Hammer.
Her memory will carry on with her sons, Larry and wife Sue Hammer of Coffeyville, Fred and wife Patti Hammer of Pittsburg, and Allen and wife Gloria Hammer of Independence, daughters, Gyda and husband Jim Bauman of Neodesha, Judy Lantz of Independence, and Linda and husband Don Graves of Hutchinson, sister, Shirley Winn of Howard, Kansas, three stepsons, and one stepdaughter and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. The family will greet friends at the visitation on Wednesday, May 19th from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Potts Chapel. Graveside services will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Elk City, Kansas on Thursday, May 20th at 2:00 pm. Memorial contributions can be left in Evelyn’s name to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.
