Eva Ruth Brown Eva Ruth Brown passed away Thursday July 30, 2009 at Mercy Hospital, Independence, Kansas. She resided at Eagle Estates. Mrs. Ruth Brown was born in Pittsburg, Kansas to Beulah Gertrude Hogan and Lewis Claude Smith on December 19, 1915. She was united in marriage to Harold A. Brown, Sr. who preceded her in death in 1997. This marriage was blessed with three children: Esther Louise, Rose Marie, and Harold A. Jr. Mrs. Rose Bramble preceded her in death in 2007. Mr. Clay Bramble resides in Independence. Harold A. Brown Jr. and his wife, Louise reside in Coffeyville, Kansas. Esther L. O'Brien resides in Liberty, Kansas. The Browns lived in Independence before moving to California in 1940, where Mr. Brown worked for Douglas Aircraft during WWII. They moved to Cherryvale and had many friends in that area. After Mr. Brown's death, Mrs. Brown moved to Independence to Penn Terrace and then after health problems, she moved to Eagle Estates. Mrs. Ruth Brown served her church for many years both as teaching and then as church secretary for twenty-five years. She is now a member of the Independence Assembly of God Church. She worked for many years, both as owner of Brown's Grocery on South 14th Street, and then worked for Foodtown, and Darby and McClaren's Grocers. She enjoyed working for Kress 510 Stores, Woolworth and Cox Variety in Cherryvale. She also worked for Litwins Department Stores, Buckles Food Lockers, Bruest and Electra and also Mercy Hospital. Her later employments were Independence High School and Cherryvale Day Care Center Cook. She enjoyed sharing memories of her employment years. Mrs. Brown enjoyed the hobby of crochet and many afghans were presented to grandchildren and great grandchildren. Grandchildren were a joy to her: David and Danny Brown; Steve, Gene, and Ron O'Brien; Janice Ropp and Robin Allred. Great grandchildren: Sienna Brown, Cheri Dodson, Jill Reese, Julie Jones, Kristin Asbill, Kerry Derrick, Karen McCoy, Kaci O'Brien, Chad Allred, Chase Allred, Corbie Kellogg, Jay O'Brien, Aaron O'Brien and Cody O'Brien. She also and 16 great great grandchildren. She is also survived by two nephews; David Smith and Lewis Miller, both of California. Mrs. Brown grew up on a farm in Pittsburg and Columbus Kansas area. She was from a family of three. Her sister Ruby Miller and brother Joe Smith both preceded her in death. Funeral service will be Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Potts Chapel of Cherryvale, Kansas. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 11, 2009 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Potts Chapel, Independence, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery of Cherryvale, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be given to the Independence Assembly of God Church, and may be left at the funeral home. Potts Chapel of Independence is in charge of the arrangements.
