Elvin Wayne Jabben, 82, of Independence passed away Wednesday April 2, 2014 at his home.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 7, 2014 at the Zion Lutheran Church with the Reverend Ted Cook Officiating. Burial will follow in the Lutheran Cemetery in Independence under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence.
Visitation hours will be held from 1:00 pm to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2014 with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Potts Chapel in Independence.
The family has suggested memorials to the Zion Lutheran School or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas.
Elvin was born September 16, 1931 in Jefferson, Kansas the son of Henry and Anna Harms Jabben. He grew up in Independence attending the Zion Lutheran School and graduated from the Independence School System. He then attended Independence Community College for two years.
On April 4, 1954 in Neodesha, Kansas at the First Baptist Church Elvin was united in marriage to Helen Harvey and the couple made their home in Independence. Helen survives at the home.
Elvin served in the United States Army with the 5th regimental combat team in Korea and was awarded the combat infantryman badge for active participation in ground combat against an armed enemy of the United States and was honorably discharged.
Elvin worked at ACC now Standard Motor Products as material Manager and retired in 1995.
He was a life member of the Independence VFW and the Zion Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife Helen of Independence, one son Brian Jabben of Independence, Ks., one daughter Pam Passauer and husband Tracy of Neodesha, Ks., one brother Arnold Jabben and Wife Barbara of Independence, Ks., one sister Arlene Bruington and husband Harold of Joplin, Mo., one granddaughter Amanda Hoover and husband Matt of Independence and one great grandson Ethan Hoover, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Elvin was preceded in death by his parents two sons Robert Jabben and Allen Jabben two brothers Ray Jabben and Bob Jabben and one sister Getrude Ruehling.
