Dortha Mae Welch, 85, of Independence Kansas passed away Monday, July 8, 2019 at Windsor Place in Coffeyville, KS. A celebration of life service will be held, Friday, July 12, 2019 at Potts Chapel at 10:00am. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, July 11, 2019, 1:00pm-7:00pm, with family greeting friends 5:00-7:00pm. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Activity Fund of Windsor Place and can be left with the funeral home.
Dortha was born on October 31, 1933 in Atlanta, Nebraska to Robert DeMott Sr. and Goldie (Johnson) DeMott. She grew up in Edna, KS and attended school in Parkville. Dortha graduated from LCCHS in Altamont, KS in 1951. She married Jerry Post of rural Edna on June 2, 1951. They later divorced. Dortha and her two daughters moved to Cherryvale, KS where she went to work for H. D. Lees until they closed. She had also worked for Tri County Manufacturing Co. and Western Publishing of Coffeyville. She retired in 1981.
Dortha was a member of the New Hope Christian Church and SEK New Voice Club. On December 24, 1969, Dortha married Howard Welch in Cherryvale, KS. They moved to their family home in Independence in 1987.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband: Howard, sister Donna Garding and two brothers: Robert DeMott and Wayne DeMott.
Those left to cherish her memory are her two daughters: Elaine Lain of Coffeyville, KS and Terry Coltharp and husband Steve of Coffeyville, KS., step daughter: Janice Golden and husband Bob of Independence, KS., brother: Dean DeMott and wife Sharylon of Coffeyville, KS, brother-in-law: Leon Garding, sister-in-law’s: Patricia DeMott and Nancy DeMott, 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
