Dorothy Jean Shields, 88, of Cherryvale, Kansas died Monday June 10, 2013 at the Regal Estate of Glenwood, Independence, Kansas. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. Dorothy was born March 18, 1925 in Hamilton, Illinois the daughter of Jesse Veach and Vera Alice Sullivan Shields. Dorothy grew up inIllinois, Missouri, West Virginia and Iowa then Cherryvale, Kansas where she attended and graduated in 1944 from the Cherryvale School System. Dorothy then attended Nurses Training at Mercy Hospital,Parsons, Kansas and graduated in 1947. She then worked as a Registered Nurse at Mercy Hospital at Parsons and Independence, Kansas. In 1951 Dorothy joined the Navy Nurse Corp. retiring in 1971 after 20 years with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After her retirement she moved to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. In 1974 she moved to Cherryvale. In 1986 she went on a Mission Trip for the Southern Baptist Church to Douglas, AZ in Auga Prieta, Mexico just across the border from Douglas. She returned to Cherryvale in 1988. Survivors include one sister Pat Fish of Quart Side, Arizona and several nieces and nephews.
