Dorothy Parrett

November 24, 1926 — November 10, 2018

Dorothy Nadine Parrett, 91, of Independence passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Saturday, November 10, 2018. A celebration of life service will be held Thursday, November 15th, 2018 at 10:00am at Potts Chapel of Independence. Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 14th from 12:00pm-7:00pm, with family greeting friends 5-7pm. In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial donations to FORPAZ, to continue supporting the park Dorothy loved, and can be left with the funeral home.
Dorothy was born November 24, 1926 in Sycamore, KS to Andy and Marjorie (Lesslie) Hilyard and was the oldest of five children. She graduated from Independence High School in 1945 and went to work at the local Army Air Base where she met her husband. One February 25, 1946 Dorothy was united in marriage to Delba (Pete) Parrett. They made their home in Independence. He preceded her in death in 1967.
Dorothy assisted her husband in operating a TV repair shop out of their home. In 1970, Dorothy graduated cosmetology school and operated her own salon in her home. Her favorite occupation was her work at the Riverside Park and Zoo as the assistant supervisor until her retirement in 1994. Dorothy's love for flowers shined in the flower beds and her passion for painting on the carousel horses and Easter rabbits and eggs.
She was a talented painter and treated her family, friends and community to many treasures over the years. Painting was just one of her many talents. She truly enjoyed life and lived to the fullest by enjoying simple things like helping people, being crafty, enjoying the outside and traveling. Dorothy had a deep love for her family and the ability to reach everyone she knew in a deep and positive way.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers: Dale, Bruce and Carl, and sister Norma.
Those left to cherish her memory are her granddaughters: Amanda (Woodman) Hayes of Joplin, MO. and Jami (Ryan) Boydston of Philadelphia, MO., 4 great-grandchildren: Michael, Aidan, Zachary and Alexis and many nieces and nephews.
