Donald Lee McCollam, 45, of Independence, KS, passed away peacefully at The
Journey Home in Bartlesville, OK, on Friday, October 21st. He was surrounded by his
family and friends at the time of his death.
Donald was born on January 24th, 1971, in Independence, KS, to Vernon and Doris
(Degarimore) McCollam. Due to mental disability, Donald resided in his parents' home
for his entire life, where he was cared for lovingly by his mother and father until his
father's passing in April 2010 and, thereafter, by his mother, Jynell McCollam (his
sister-in-law), and others. As a child, Donald attended the Verdigris Valley
Developmental Center (VVDC) at the age of four, followed by Tri-County Special
Education from age seven to twenty-one. He then transitioned into Class LTD as a
young adult, where he worked for 23 years, and finally to Southeast Kansas
Independent Living (SKIL), where he worked at the time of his death. Donald had a
sweet and loving disposition, but also a playful and mischievous sense of humor.
Visitation for family and friends will take place on Friday, October 28th, from 9 am to 10
am, followed by a funeral service at 10 am, both at Potts Chapel in Independence, KS.
Chaplain Mark Bright of Bartlesville will officiate. Donald will then be buried next to his
father at the Mount Hope Cemetery, also in Independence, KS. Memorial contributions
may be made in Donald's name to SKIL or AWOL (Animals with Our Love), both in
Independence.
Donald is survived by his mother, Doris McCollam, and four siblings--Greg (and Jynell)
McCollam of Independence, KS; Pat (and Jill) McCollam of Greenwood, IN; Diana (and
Mike) Poliquin of Atchison, KS; and Lori (and Brian) Houghton of Coffeyville, KS; as well
as numerous nieces and nephews.
