Denzell E. “Red” Jones
June 18, 1926 – December 2, 2019
Red Jones, farmer and long-time owner operator of Red’s Restaurant in Independence, passed away on December 2, 2019 at his daughter’s home in Kingman, Kansas
Red was born in Peru, Kansas but grew up and lived in the Independence area from a very young age. He attended Independence schools and graduated from IHS in 1943. He worked and farmed immediately after graduation until joining the United States Marine Corp, serving in the South Pacific. After his military service, he returned to Independence, Kansas and married Mary Knoblock in 1948. They were married for 69 years before Mary’s death in 2017.
Red is survived by his four children, Chester of Zuni, New Mexico, Helen Conkling of Roeland Park, Kansas, Mike of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Kathy Hurst of Kingman, Kansas, his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Red was preceded in death by his siblings, Norma Kenworthy, Lorna Morgan, Marietta Warren, and Delmar Jones. Visitation will be held at Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas on Friday, December 6th at 10:00 AM with funeral service immediately following at 11:00 AM.
