Deacon Chester Green

Deacon Chester Green of Independence Kansas was born on December 17,1942 in Lenapah Oklahoma to Willie Green, and Adeline Shoat Green. His Maternal grandmother Georgia Burrse - Shoat also assisted in raising him. Chester passed away on April 3, 2020 at Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville Oklahoma. Chester grew up in Spiro, and Fort Coffee, Oklahoma. He was also known as Chet, O’Pa, Pops, and Check-Mate. He was a member, and the Head Deacon at Pleas Temple Church Of God In Christ (COGIC) Independence Kansas. It is well noted by family members, church members, and the entire community, that Chester had the privilege of positively impacting hundreds of lives. Generations recall Deacon Green driving the church bus for over 25 years for the Pleas Temple COGIC youth department, until his health would no longer allow. Chester honorably served his country in the United States National Guard. Chester was employed at Atlas Cement Plant for over 42 years, of which many co-workers he adopted as family members.

His siblings reflect on the fond memories that “Check-Mate” brought to their family of joy, laughter, strong family values, and time spent at annual Family Reunions. His oldest sister Doris said “The only thing Check-Mate did that we had to get him straight on was when he was a little boy he would tattle, but I soon got him away from that.” Siblings that preceded him in death are Otis Green, Billy Clayton, and Mary Ruth Green-Scott. Surviving Siblings are Doris Green-Clayton, Earl Green, and Devola Clayton -Shepard. He has a host of nieces, and nephews.

At the height of his young-adulthood, Chester met and married the love of his life of 59 years. Mary Louise Jones-Green of whom preceded him in death on April 2, 2020. 1 child was born into their union, Morticia Ann Green-Johnson, of Fort Worth Texas. He loved and raised their family as one. Eugene Barker III, of Independence, Kansas, Antonieo Lee Barker (Detrik) of Mesquite Texas, Charles Edward Barker Sr., (Arie) of Independence, Kansas, LaDonna Barker-Webb, of Moreno Valley California, and Gary Terrell Barker, of Independence, Kansas.

He was very proud of each one of his grandchildren: Ariane Barker-Meadows, Casondra Webb-Cole, Jennifer Webb-Knox, Jessica Webb-Luyanda, Charles Edward Barker II., Ebony-Barker Tucker, Amber Johnson-Jones, Aridan Johnson, Tiffany Barker- Lewis, Mario Barker, Octavia Barker, Antonieo Lee Barker II, Lisa Barker, Kingston Barker, and Johan Barker. The family continued to multiply with 23 great- grandchildren.

Deacon Green lived the phrase: “Anything I do is everything I do.” (with precision). An outdoorsman in his own rite, pound for pound, Deacon Green has been dubbed by uncles, cousins, brothers, and friends; as “The Best” marksman, hunter, fisherman, archer, and driver. Being “The Best’ wasn’t slighted in any other area of his life. As a husband his qualities of love were inexhaustible. He loved “Lou, “and made certain that he not only told her, but also showed her. He was a humble servant to God and to his church. As a grandfather his grandson’s allowed him to revisit his youth. His granddaughters were the apple of his eye.

Deacon Green, when we remember you, as a father, these titles will come to mind: Prince Among Men, Patriarch, Confidant, Teacher, Hero, Husband, and Dad. We’re so grateful to be a part of such a phenomenal love story  between you and our dear Mother Mary Louise Jones-Green. It couldn’t have been written any better from a bestselling author. Although your words were few, the way you lived your life exemplified how the just shall live by his faith. You were a solider, through trials, sickness, and all the peaks and valleys of life. We will remember that your unconditional love has been one of the most potent moral forces in our lives. We could never have the resources to pay you for your selfless generosity, but God can, and he will. Well done.

There will be a public drive by visitation without exiting cars at the Potts Chapel on Thursday, April 16, 2020 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Please enter the Potts Chapel garage on the West side of building off of Penn Avenue.
