David L. Carnes, 61, of Independence, Kansas, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 11, 2011, while vacationing at Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii. Visitation hours will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, March 21, 2011 with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at the First Baptist Church North Campus, 2414 N. Eighth, in Independence, Kansas with interment in Mount Hope Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. David was born on December 8, 1949 in Coffeyville, Kansas to Orain Sam Carnes and Ruth Peggy Wooten Carnes. He grew up in rural Tyro and went to school at several oneroom schools, attended Wayside School and graduated in 1967 from Caney High School. He attended Coffeyville Community Junior College before enlisting in the United States Air Force on July 8, 1969, serving one year in Viet Nam and was discharged on July 6, 1973. On March 21, 1970, he was united in marriage with Janet Coble and she survives at the home. David worked various job and got a heating and cooling degree from TriCounty Tech in 1977. Immediately he started working for Lees Cooling and Heating as a service technician. In 1985 he and two partners purchased the company. He served as President and General Manager until his death. David was a member of the First Baptist Church, Independence, where he served as deacon and held multiple positions. He was also a member of the Independence Gun Club, ACCA Air Conditioning Contractors of American, and former president of the Independence Wrestling Club. In addition of his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jeffrey Carnes wife Lanae and Samuel Carnes of Independence, daughter Emily Joplin husband Scott of Emporia, four grandsons, Evan Carnes, Colin Carnes, Joshua Joplin, and Nolan Carnes, and granddaughter Jaycie Joplin. In addition, he is survived by two sisters, Janet Jabben of Oswego, Lois Williams of Hixson, Tennessee, and brother Phillip Carnes of Bentonville, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents. The family has suggested memorials to the American Heart Association or the First Baptist Church and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Independence.
