Clifford O. Howard age 85, of Independence, Kansas died Monday, November 24, 2008 at his home in Independence, Kansas. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 28, 2008 at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Grandview Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel. Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 28, 2008 with the family receiving friends at the Potts Chapel. The family has suggested memorials to the Independence Community College Scholarship Fund and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel. Clifford was born January 31, 1922 in Mulvane, Kansas to Clifford A. and Ethel Barthoamew Howard. He grew up in Mulvane, Kansas and graduated from the Mulvane High School. Clifford farmed in Towanda, Kansas before entering the United States Army Air Corp and also served for the United States Air Force during World War II and the Korean Conflict. On January 14, 1943 Clifford married Peggy Watkins in Santa Monica, California and she preceded him in death in 1991. Clifford managed department Stores throughout Kansas and owned and operated with his wife Howards Department Store in Neodesha, Kansas and Know Place in Independence, Kansas. He also worked at Independence Community College. In his retirement Clifford raised miniature horses and owned Howards Oil Company. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, a volunteer fireman and a member of the rural water board. Survivors include two daughters Dorothy and husband Alvin Tefft of Topeka, Kansas; Debbie Clark of Nashville, TN; one son Steve Howard of Wichita, Kansas; 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; one brother Wayne Howard of Beaver Lake, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by parents, two brother Floyd Herbert and son-in-law John Clark.
