Clifford D. Hayden, age 90, of Independence, Kansas died Monday, February 23, 2015 at the Cherryvale Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 28, 2015 at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas with the Reverend Marty Warren of the Mount Zion Community Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Chetopa Cemetery in Chetopa, Kansas.
Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 27, 2015 with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas.
The family has suggested memorials to the Mount Zion Community Church and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel.
Clifford "Cliff" D. Hayden was born March 16, 1924 in rural Bartlett, Kansas to Ernest Henry and Edith Morrow (Linthicum) Hayden. He grew up in Chetopa, Kansas and graduated from the Chetopa High School. Cliff also attended Independence Community College. Cliff worked in the Coal Mines in Pitcher, Oklahoma. On June 10, 1943 Clifford entered the United States Army and served during World War II receiving the Purple Heart before his honorable discharge on November 15, 1945.
When Cliff returned he went to work at the Ammunition plant in Parsons, Kansas before driving a truck for many years until his retirement. In January of 1947 Cliff married Betty Williams in Columbus, Kansas and she preceded him in death on July 15, 1984. On May 29, 1987 Cliff married Evelyn Morrow and she preceded him in death on July 16, 2001. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and attended the Mount Zion Community Church and was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.
On April 22, 2002 Cliff married Velda Tanner in rural Cherryvale, Kansas and the couple made their home in Independence, Kansas.
Survivors include his wife Velda of the home; one son Michael Hayden of Tulsa, Oklahoma; four daughters Marlene Jackson of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Vivian Tucker of Independence, Kansas, Valerie Jensen of Kansas City, Kansas and Michele Hayden of California; eight grandchildren
