Carol Leona Smith

On January 13th, Carol Leona Smith (Morrow) passed away at her home. She was born on April 08, 1950, and was a lifelong resident of Independence, Kansas. 

Carol attended Overfield and District 40 Country Schools through 8th grade. After graduating from Independence High School, she moved to Emporia, Kansas. There, she earned her cosmetology certification and went on to pass her state boards in 1969. Carol worked as a hair stylist for the next 44 years. She was an owner of The Mane Event in downtown Independence until her retirement in 2013.

Carol was known and will be remembered for her beautiful smile, hugs, integrity, and kindness. She enjoyed anything that involved spending time with her family and close friends, who were also her family. She was an avid sports fan who could always tell you game times, stats, and the underdog’s story and why to root for them. 

She is survived by her husband, James Smith, daughters, Tara Castillo (Jerrome) and Jami Stout (Jeff). Grandchildren, Madison Castillo, Lacey Castillo (Tyler), Chloe Gomes (Colton), Landon Woodyard (Tayler) Great grandchild, Charlotte Woodyard. Sisters, Karen Barnett and Kathy Golden. Nieces, Vicki Ringeisen, Michelle Curtis, Christina Mercer and Christina Houston (Shawn). Nephews, Rod Ringeisen (Donna), Ben Zeiner (Becky), Eric Atkins (Kasey), Brian McBride (Christi) and Brett Mcbride. Along with several great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Leroy Morrow and Evelyn Hayden formerly McFarland.
