BUTCH SHIPPY
Raymond "Butch" Shippy, age 78, of Caney, Kansas, passed away peacefully at his home after a full and wonderful life. His family was at his side.
Raymond Lee Shippy, was born January 16, 1937, fourth of four children born to Cecil George Shippy and Daisy Ann (Hays) Shippy of Caney. He grew up in Caney, attended Caney schools, graduating high school there in 1955. He was employed 24 ears by Reda Pump, Bartlesville, OK, in the water-well pump assembly division. He then worked for Standard Pump in Dewey, OK for 5 years, before going to work as head of maintenance at the Southeast Kansas Area Technical Vocational School, Coffeyville, KS. He retired from SEK VOTECH in 1999.
He never did retire from laboring in some form or fashion. He enjoyed working with Dave Alexander Auctions, Independence, gardening, woodworking, going to auctions and sales. He would work his regular job, and then enjoyed working with whomever called requesting he "share his skills", whether it be plumbing, carpentry, TV antenna installation, automotive repair, farming, home remodeling, or just 'handy-man.' He was proclaimed a jack-of-all trades. Sometimes he would simply enjoy fishing, especially if you called needing a partner, and preferred you knew how to clean the fish. The family proclaimed him a dedicated news-watcher, but impressed that he was a devoted weather watcher - not allowing any interruption. He attended the Methodist church as a child. In later years he was a member of Caney Saddle Club, and helped out with the 4H club as well as the agricultural department for SEK VOTECH.
His priority in life was his family - attending school functions, events, and other activities for his 3 children, 7 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and one great-great son.
In November 12, 1955, he married Sharon Lee Brake in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. To this union was born three wonderful children, Sydney Lynn, Dale Alan, and Victoria Lee. Butch and Sharon raised their children in Caney.
Survivors blessed by his memory are his wife, Sharon, of the home, daughter Sydney Theiss of Tulsa, son Dale Shippy and wife Janice of rural Caney, six grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and one great great grandson; a sister Mildred Ward of Lawrence, KS, and a brother, Chester Shippy of Denton, TX; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his daughter Vicky Thompson, his parents, and a sister Dorothy Swayne.
Graveside Celebration of Life Services are scheduled for 2:00pm, Tuesday, February 3, 2015, at Sunnyside Cemetery, Caney, with Evangelist David Bycroft of Tyro Christian Church officiating.
