Independence

Bobbie Wayne Bennett, age 90 of Independence, Kansas passed away at Freeman Health System in Joplin, Missouri on Wednesday, March 11, 2020.

Bobbie was born on April 27, 1929 in Elk City, Kansas to Claude and Della (Sweargin) Bennett. Bob attended the country schools in Elk City through the eighth grade and then graduated from Elk City High School. He then attended business school in Omaha, Nebraska. Bob proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. In 1953 Bob was released from active duty and transferred to the Army Reserve Unit for the completion of his 8 years of service. On September 18, 1955 he married Nona Jean Donaldson in Independence, Kansas. From this union they welcomed 3 children, Kathy, David and Teresa. After completing his military obligation, Bob worked at Sinclair Pipeline Company in Independence from 1953 to 1964, then Sinclair Oil and Gas in Tulsa from 1964 to 1969. Bob then came back to Independence and worked for Yerkes and Michels CPA from 1969 to 1990. He then retired from Independence Community College after working from 1990 to 1994. Bob was a proud member of the American Legion, and First Baptist Church and Wesleyan Church. After retirement Bob was an active member in the American Red Cross and the hospital auxiliary.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Della Bennett, wife, Nona Jean, brothers, Allen, and Eugene Bennett, and sisters, Evelyn Etter, and Daisy Bennett, and grandchild, Amanda Bennett.

Bob’s memory will live on with his children, Kathy Stone of St. Paul, NE, David and wife Susan Bennett of Independence, and Teresa and husband Harvey Lewis Jr. of Independence, brother, Norman Bennett of Tulsa, 7 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at Potts Chapel in Independence on Monday, March 16th at 10:00 am. A memorial can be made in Bob’s name to the Wesleyan Church, memorials can be left with Potts Chapel. To leave the family a special message of condolence, please visit www.pottsfuneralhome.com.
