Betty Jeanne Carter, age 88, of Independence, Kansas died June 20, 2010 at the Cherryvale Nursing Rehabilitation Care Center. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas and private family graveside services will be held at a later date in Fairview Cemetery in Cherryvale, Kansas. Betty J. Carter was born July 1, 1921 in Cherryvale, Kansas to William Robert and Grace Ruth Giles Winsell. She grew up in Cherryvale and graduated from Cherryvale High School. On January 26, 1941 she was united in Marriage to Leo Anthony Carter in Joplin, Missouri and he preceded her in death in 1996. Betty worked at Kellenbergers Caf, H.D. Lee Co. and retired from VallisWngroff Business Forms. She was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and Altar Society. She enjoyed reading, keeping up on current events and was an avid NASCAR and NFL fan. Survivors include her three children, Lance A. Carter of Cherryvale, Kent A. Carter of Independence, and Jeannie L. Peugh of Post Falls, ID. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Shaun A. Carter of Tulsa, OK, Brandy M. Carter of Independence, Jeffrey F. Peugh of Rathdrum, ID., Bradley H. Peugh of Coeur dAlene, ID eight great grandchildren, Ashley R. Carpenter of ST. Maries, ID., Chelsie R. Peugh, Stephanie K. Peugh, Samantha J. Peugh, Colton T. Peugh, Cody A. Peugh, Payton N. Peugh and Cheyenne L.R. Peugh, all of Idaho three greatgreat grandchildren, Lily A. Carpenter, James P. Carpenter and Brooke L. Hell. She is also survived by a sister, Ruth Schiler of Portland, OR., and many nieces and nephews. Other survivors include five step great grandchildren and five step greatgreatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leo, sister Carolyn Phillips and stepgranddaughter Misti. The family has suggested memorials to the ST. Judes Childrens Hospital or the Cherryvale Public Library and contributions may be sent to the Potts Chapel, P.O. Box 801, Independence, Kansas.
