Barbara Potter

Barbara Laura Potter, 73, of Independence, Kansas, passed away on Friday March 11, 2016 at Via Christi Hospital in Wichita.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, March 16 at First Presbyterian Church (201 S. 5th St.) in Independence, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The family will welcome visitors from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral service will be Thursday, March 17 at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church.

Barbara was born on September 11, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York to Charles and Lillian Lapen. She graduated from Bloomfield College in Newark, New Jersey in 1964.

She worked in Newark as a social worker for several years. Her desire to work with special needs students led to her teaching career, which began in Carteret, New Jersey and continued in Greenbrook, New Jersey.

After marrying Don Potter in 1969, she moved with him to Independence, where they owned and operated Potter Auto & Tractor Supply for 22 years. Barbara worked again with children as director of First Presbyterian Church's Preschool. She was a devoted Christian and mentored many women in the community.

Barbara is survived by her husband Don and her children, Karen Moser of Weston, Florida and her husband Don; Steve Potter of Cherryvale and his wife Susan; and Sharon Potter of Kansas City. She was predeceased by her parents Charles and Lillian Lapen and her brothers Allen, Carl, Richard and Robert.

Barbara was a loving and compassionate wife, mother and friend. She will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her.
