Barbara D. Hilyard, 81, of Independence passed away Sunday at the Medicalodge of Independence, Kansas.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 25, 2014 at the Potts Chapel Independence with the Reverend Gerald Eytcheson officiating. Burial will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Coffeyville, Kansas under the direction of the Potts Chapel, Independence.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 24, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Potts Chapel Independence.
The family has suggested memorials to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary or the Alzheimers Association and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel.
Barbara was born September 23, 1932 in Liberty, Kansas, the daughter of Dale and Juanita Frances Guier OBrien. She graduated from Independence High School and attended Independence Community College.
On December the 28, 1950 in Harrison Arkansas, Barbara was united in marriage to Dale E. Hilyard and the couple made their home in Independence. Dale preceded her in death in 1994.
She enjoyed line dancing and traveling with her husband and together they raised Belgian horses.
Barbara worked as a Secretary for the ARCO Pipeline Company and retired after thirty five years.
She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Roadrunners, Spinners and Weavers Guild and the Arrowhead Lanes Bowling League.
Survivors include one daughter Daleen J. and husband Michael Steele of Independence, Ks., one son Kenneth D. and wife B. J. Hilyard of Independence, Ks., one sister Karen Sue Tice of Cherryvale, Ks., one brother Thomas A. Bennett of South Carolina, seven grandchildren and 8 great grand children.
Barbara was preceded in death by her Husband Dale Hilyard, her parents Dale and Juanita OBrien, one daughter Marilyn Kay Harding and a brother Robert F. OBrien.
