Barbara Jay, a woman whose life was a testament to love, faith, and unwavering kindness, passed away on June 3, 2025, at Olathe Medical Center after a brief stay. She was surrounded by her devoted husband of 53 years, her two sons and their wives, and her beloved grandchildren, and brother Kim all who shared stories of her profound love for God, Jesus, and others. The fruit of her life's work is evident in the generations present, carrying on her legacy of love.
From a young age, Barbara professed her faith in Jesus, a commitment she lived out in her daily service. During her short hospital stay, Pastor Paul Brandes of Christ Community Church of Shawnee, KS, provided comfort and worship, supporting the family.
Barbara’s lifelong partnership with Phillip began with a memorable first date at the Independence Drive-In, watching "Planet of the Apes," the start to a 53-year marriage.
Barbara was known for her gentle and thoughtful spirit. She was never in a bad mood and never complained. Her hugs were legendary, and her baking skills produced the best cherry dump cake and orange fluff. She had a wonderful wit and was known for her fantastic rendition of "Happy Birthday”, and hosting family gatherings also known as “parties” through her generous and hospitable spirit.
Beyond her roles as daughter, wife, mom, Grandma, and Gma, Barbara cherished caring for and helping others. She served as a para educator for Caney schools, touching many lives with her compassionate nature.
Her memory will be cherished by her husband Phillip Jay, Phillip (Shelly) Jay, Jason (Sandra) Jay, 12 grandchildren: Elijah, Ellyana, Emerson, Josiah, Emmett, Lena, Fatima, Orah, Chauncey, Evadean, Ashley, and Kate, her brother Kim (Patty) Drum, niece Sarah (James)Young, and many extended family and dear friends. Barbara is preceded in death by her parents Floyd and Sarah Drum.
Barbara found joy in sewing, baking, and watching old western TV shows. These hobbies, like all aspects of her life, were infused with her characteristic warmth and generosity.
Barbara Jay's life was a beacon of selfless love and unwavering faith. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her, and her legacy of love will continue to inspire generations.
Visitation will be Sunday, June 8, 2025, at Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas, 107 N. State Street, from 5pm-7pm. Services will be held Monday, June 9, 2025, at Cornerstone Church in Caney, Kansas at 10am. Graveside will follow afterwards at Sunnyside Cemetery in Caney.
