Alvin Wendell Wood, age 84, of Cherryvale, Kansas died Friday, December 31, 2010 at the Mercy Hospital in Independence, Kansas. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at the Potts Chapel in Cherryvale, Kansas with the Reverend Marty Warren officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Cherryvale, Kansas. Visitation hours will be held from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at the Potts Chapel in Cherryvale, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the American Lung Association and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Cherryvale, Kansas. Alvin was born October 17, 1926 in Cherryvale, Kansas to Arch and Virginia Stubblefield Wood. Alvin grew up in Cherryvale, Kansas and graduated from the Cherryvale High School. On June 1, 1945 Alvin married Dorothy Mae Hines in Cherryvale, Kansas. She preceded him in death on August 5, 2001. Alvin served in the United States Air Force and served in Germany for 18 months as a Chaplain Assistant. Alvin owned and operated Orion Times in Orion, Illinois. He was a member of the Ham Radio Club and the Mount Zion Community Church. Survivors include one son Richard L. Wood of Houston, Missouri two daughters Jo C. Seip of Urbandale, Iowa and Janie A. Eddings of Springfield, Missouri one sister Virginia Esser of Detroit, Michigan five grandchildren.
