Alta B. Vining, age 94 of Caney, Kansas died Friday, May 25, 2012 at the Regal Estates in Independence, Kansas. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at the Caney United Methodist Church with the Pastor Bob Clemence officiating. Burial will follow in the Robbins Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas. Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 29, 2012 with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the Caney United Methodist Church and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas. Alta was born March 28, 1918 in Sitka, Arkansas to Edmund and Ida Blaine Herren. Alta attended schools in Colorado. On August 7, 1936 Alta married Oscar Vining in Cortez, Colorado the couple made their home in Ackmen, Colorado until moving to Tucson, Arizona in 1946. In 1949 the couple moved to Caney, Kansas. Alta worked at Dixon and Continental Can in Coffeyville for 11 years. Alta then worked as a nurses aid in Dr. Scimecas Hospital until moving to the Hospital on south High street in Caney when it was built. Alta received her nurses training as Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. She worked as hospital staff and Geriatric Nurse for 21 years in Caney and Bartlesville retiring in 1984. Oscar preceded her in death on February 3, 1976. Alta was a member of the Caney United Methodist Church, Eastern Star and the Garden Club. Survivors include two daughters Norma and husband Leroy Birnbrook of Bethany, Louisiana and Arlene Bellairs of West Dundee, Illinois three grandsons, one granddaughter and several great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, 3 sisters and 2 brothers.
