Alice Ruiz Lopez, age 78, of Independence, Kansas died Thursday, July 24, 2014 at the Freeman Health System in Joplin, Missouri.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at the St. Andrew Catholic Church with the Father Andrew Heiman officiating. Cremation will follow with private family inurnment at a later date under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas.

Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas. Reciting of the Rosary will be held at 6:00 p.m. at the St. Andrew Catholic Church.

The family has suggested memorials to AWOL or FORPAZ and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas.

Alice Ruiz Lopez was born March 30, 1936 in Independence, Kansas to Max C. and Frances Perez Leon Ruiz. She grew up in Independence, Kansas and graduated from the Independence High School. She then attended the Chanute Jr. College of Nursing and Independence Community College.

On September 23, 1960 Alice married Matias M. Lopez in Independence, Kansas where the couple made their home. Matias preceded her in death on April 10, 1993. Alice worked for Dana Engine Systems for 25 years until her retirement. She was a member of the St. Andrew Catholic Church and was a great cook known all over the community for her enchiladas.

Survivors include four sons John J. Rodriguez of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Matthew M. Lopez of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Timothy and wife Debi Lopez of St. Paul, Kansas, and Robert Bo Lopez of Independence, Kansas two daughters Teresa L. and husband Paul Schepp of Charleston, South Carolina and Jolene and husband David Menzer of Independence, Kansas six brothers Victor Leon of Kissinee, Florida, Leo Leon of Wichita, Kansas, Carlos Leon of Jenks, Oklahoma, Raymond Reese of Tulsa, Oklahoma, David Reese of Coffeyville, Kansas and Phillip Reese of Coffeyville, Kansas five sisters Becky Winebrenner of Independence, Kansas, Delores McQuistin of Athens, Ohio, Sandra Manos of Wichita, Kansas, Linda Salazar of Independence, Kansas and Rita French of Parsons, Kansas 21 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband two brothers, and one great grandchild.
