Alfred Castorena

Alfred M. Castorena, age 87, of Independence, Kansas died Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at the Cherryvale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Cherryvale, Kansas.

Reciting of the Rosary will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 21, 2013 with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at the St. Andrews Catholic Church with Father Andrew Heiman officiating. Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas.

Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, December 20, 2013 at the Potts Chapel.


The family has suggested memorials to the St. Andrews Catholic Church Building Fund and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas.

Alfred was born July 22, 1926 in Cherryvale, Kansas to John and Martha Hernandez Castorena. He grew up in Cherryvale, Kansas and attended the Cherryvale School System. Alfred was in the National Youth Administration in Eureka, Kansas and was a Jr. WPA.

On September 1, 1949 Alfred married Jessie Rodriquez in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Jessie preceded him in death on April 16, 2009. Alfred worked at an Air Base and did concrete work for over 20 years working on several area damns. Alfred was a member of the St. Andrews Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sons Alfred M. Castorena Jr. of Wichita, Kansas and Patrick D. Castorena of Baxter Springs, Kansas one daughter Deloris Powell of Wichita, Kansas one sister Geneva Samora of Great Bend, Kansas eight grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
