Alfred Ashford

Alfred A. Ashford Sr., age 87 of Caney, Kansas died Friday, December 26, 2008 at the Caney Nursing Center in Caney, Kansas. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas with the Reverend Angela DeFischer officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunnyside Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Chapel. Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, December 29, 2008 with the family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Potts Chapel in Caney, Kansas. The family has suggested memorials to the Caney United Methodist Church and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel. Alfred Andrew Ashford Sr. was born November 4, 1921 in Peru, Kansas to Otto and Versie OKelly Ashford. He grew up in Peru, Kansas and graduated from the Peru High School in 1942. In September of 1942. Alfred entered the United States Army and served during World War II until his honorable discharge of October 7, 1945. On June 29, 1946 Alfred married Violet Lowry in Independence, Kansas. The couple moved to Caney, Kansas in November of 1947. Alfred worked in the Oil Fields and for Continental Can and later for the City of Caney, Kansas. Alfred worked for 25 years for the Caney School System in maintenance before retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Caney United Methodist Church over 50 years, Lifetime member of the American Legion Ernest Brown Lodge 138 and lifetime member of the VFW Post 1186 in Independence, Kansas. Survivors include his wife Violet of the home; one son Alfred Ashford Jr. and wife Jan of Rocky Mount, North Carolina; one daughter Sheila Ashford of Caney, Kansas; two brothers Clifford Ashford of Independence, Kansas and Frank Ashford of Peru, Kansas; one sister Thelma Kerr of Sedan, Kansas; one granddaughter Ashley Ashford of Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers James, William, Richard and one sister Mary Haughn.
